Fall cannot start, at least not in my mind, until the day after my daughter’s late September birthday. Once the last morsels of confetti cake disappear, though, and the sun sets on summer, I begin decorating the house for fall in full force. The onset of autumn marks the beginning of cozy season, with crackling logs in the fireplace, plenty of candlelight, knit blankets, and baking everything apple and pumpkin. It invites anyone who enters to get comfy and stay awhile. Here are a few easy things I did around our house to welcome fall with style. I went with a simple, less-is-more approach this year, with a handful of minimal changes for maximum effect.
How I Styled the Front Porch for Fall
Your front porch gives the first impression, and you want it to be a good one. Hang a leafy or festive wreath, whichever suits your mood. Mums in vibrant fall colors are a staple of the season. Take your pick – you can’t go wrong – and grab a few in varying sizes. Drop the biggest mums directly into your planters for instant impact. I love the Fairytale pumpkins I found this year. They’re squatty and warty and vivid and muted and perfect. Cascading down the steps, they’re a fun introduction to what awaits inside. Lanterns near the front door on chilly fall evenings are magical, too, and the warm glow of candlelight welcomes your guests as they arrive.
Decorating for Fall in the Entryway
In the entryway, I like to have a tall fall floral of some kind together with an object or two that signals the season. Here, I added a few spider tealight holders from Target and a sign I found a few years ago at HomeGoods. Nothing fancy, but just enough to be playful and fun. Leave plenty of white space…an edited vignette always looks more thoughtful and calming.
Decorating for Fall in the Living Room
A glass pumpkin and a branch of autumn gold on the table is all the living room requires to warm it up. If you have a seasonal throw or pillows, layer them in here, too. The fuzzy spider steals the show. Just a touch of Halloween works well to keep the space elevated instead of overly decorated.
How I Decorated for Fall in the Kitchen
The kitchen is, perhaps, the easiest to style for different times of the year. My big bowl gets filled with whatever fruit is in season. For now, it’s delicious apples, which are an entire experience unto themselves here in Washington with orchards all around us. The best kitchen decor item, without fail, is a yummy treat that looks pretty and is ready to eat. (See one of my favorite fall-time snacks here.) I’ve stocked up on all the ingredients for pumpkin bread and have some on hand most days, displayed in a pretty cake plate with a domed lid. Put out a small bowl of candy in October for Halloween, as well as any festive mugs and dishware you may have, for an easy nod to autumn.
Fall Style in the Bedroom
Finally, a bed full of cozy, textured layers is never a bad idea. I brought in this brushed flannel pillow in a rich green windowpane pattern, perfect for the duration of the holiday season, and added the plush pumpkins in neutral tones as well as a real mini pumpkin in white on the nightstand. It goes without saying that you’ll want heaps of pillows, too – some quilted, some textured, all of them creating a comforting retreat you’ll want to climb into. Be sure to light a candle, too, for a romantic finish.
Styling your home for fall does not need to be complicated or expensive. Small touches of the season, thoughtfully placed, make a beautiful home, collectively, when combined with what you already have. Whether it’s for you and yours or for all your fall gatherings, comfort and ease in unfussy spaces is key.
